I guess I'm going to have to accept it. It makes no difference whatsoever that "impact" is a noun, and only an noun. Not a verb. Worse, "invite" is a verb, only a verb, and never never never never never never never never is, was, or ever will be a noun. But what I will have to accept is that creepy skin-crawl for the rest of my life, because people simply will use those words that way. Dorkfuckers.

edit: "Orientate" is not a word either. It's "orient." Back off, before I invent new epithets, insolent weasels!

When our leaders abuse the language as badly as ours are today.....when good education is derided in favor of the lowest common denominator....When I have a college professor tell me that spelling and grammar will not effect my grade on an essay test.....

I wonder about society 20 years from now. We can't fully communicate now, imagine the misunderstandings as this progresses. It makes me want to be a hermit. An armed hermit.

He and I are playing phone tag.

He has had a lean winter season but it is begining to get better. Computer problems have temporarily knocked him off line, but he is hoping to be back soon. He is actually talking about making it to Pennsic this year.

I thought about it. I really, really thought about it. And then, I thought about it some more.

And I just couldn't bring myself to do it - I couldn't bring myself to to utilize those three words in a single sentence that would make your skin crawl clear off your body.

Mostly because I knew that somehow, you would hurt me. Even from way over there.

But I thought about it.

While I have explained several times that there is no such word as "irregardless", some people I know insist on continuing it's usage with wild abandon. I live in the DC Sphere of Grammatical Horror.

Oh, and I find tossing blessed salt around the keyboard and computer and then vacuuming it up really helps with the Icks after you've been reading email from whatever Order list you belong to... that and some single malt and a long bath. (Yes we had another polling.)

You know, considering the topic of this thread, I was seriously tempted to suggest that the apostrophe on the word between "continuing" and "usage" shouldn't be there - you should be using "its" (genitive), not "it's" (short for "it is") - but I decided that would take things a bit too far.

(From a comment made on the Rialto about 15 years ago: "It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours. And likewise, yours and theirs too.")

A good epithet makes certain hostile primeval sounds, such as hiss and spit, and bares the teeth if possible. Meaning is secondary. ;)

Technically speaking, ANY word in the English language can be turned into a verb, noun, adverb, adjective...you get the picture.

Take the words "Fuck" and "shit," for instance. I believe you can use both in all parts of a single sentence and still be grammatical about it.

OED (Oxford English Dictionary) and Websters both review as much public printed material as possible. They will watch a word over a 10 year period, or so, and then determine if the word should be added to the dictionary. Once the word is in the dictionary, or a new definition of an existing word, you can use it in Scrabble...or in your sentence. Doesn't make it any more "right," but there you have it.

I blame a lot of our failing grammar system on e-mail, chat rooms, and MMORPG in-game chat. All 3 take shortcuts. Top it off with a k-12 education system that hesitates to hurt the child's feelings by holding them back when they can't pass a class...we are doomed.

But... "impact" has been a verb since 1601. and "invite" has been a noun since 1659.

I enjoy a good rant about language as much as anyone. Rant away. :) I just can't help correcting factual errors when I see them. It's a reflex.
