It's like a train wreck. I don't want to look, and yet I stare. I don't want to pay any attention to this crap, and yet, the Voices In My Head simply will not shut up until I let them have their say.

[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
Where do guts come into the equation? Has anyone actually studied the mechanics of poll-writing? Has anyone noticed that these poorly grammatically constructed disingenuous taunts masquerading as "controversy" are actually designed to elicit the exact responses we have seen posted? Yes, these questions fed you the answers they were looking for. Gallup and other organizations have made a science out of it. Phone polls don't want your opinion. They couldn't care less what you say; they want to plant ideas in your heads by how they worded the questions, and it worked.

[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
I would do the same fucking thing I do now. Keep wondering. [Properly, this should read "Would you do meth if it were legalized." Humph.]

[03] Abortion: for or against it?
Don't like it, don't have one. But check that wording -- no one, in the history of ever, has ever said they were "for" abortion. Reword the fucking question and stop feeding me the answer.

[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?

What the fuck kind of question is that? It hasn't. Are we supposed to ignore the dozens of female heads of state worldwide, and that doesn't count the dozens of female heads of government (which includes prime ministers)? Or perhaps this isn't about a woman, it's about a world president: "Do you think the world would fail with a woman president?" Maybe it's actually a very sophisticated question about a one-world governmental solution that's so complex that we're being asked to speculate as to whether that government would fail worldwide?

Nah. Again, stop feeding me the answer.

[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
I believe it exists. Next.

[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
It was, once. But what's up with that "already" wording?

[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
That in itself is a sexual position...

[08] Do you believe in God?

How are you supposed to define "God" in a poll -- for God's sake?

[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
It could be argued it's legal now -- the laws are being changed to make it illegal. Crappy question.

[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?

Hello, Columbus, Cortez, where the fuck do you think we all came from? Was there some time frame cutoff? It wasn't legal in 1492 to move in then and kill all those people...

[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
What, did she find it at the grocery store and you think she should turn it in to the lost and found? It's only in the last 200 years that 12 year olds didn't have babies and were considered grown ups. Get some perspective.

[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?

Do you perhaps mean re-lowered to eighteen? It was eighteen when I was eighteen, and that's not so damn long ago. Does anybody recall the successful argument for the 26th Amendment? "Old enough to die for your country, old enough to vote." I think if you're old enough to die for your country, you ought to be old enough to get shot while drunk, too.

[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?

Golly, where did I leave my time machine? Another stupid question feeding you the answer.

[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?

Do I agree it is illegal? Hell, the courts don't agree that it's illegal.

[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
I don't have any.

[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?

I don't know. Why?

[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?

Lawn furniture. I'm gonna write it in.

[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Afraid, no. Lotta people think I don't need to use so many four-letter words, that I'm flip and sarcastic, and that I completely miss the point. They're probably right. LOL

I would so love to know where this "controversial" poll came from. It has all the earmarks of one of those MySpace postings. Ooh, now there's fear.

Thank you for echoing my sentiments about nearly every poll I've ever seen.

Actually, I malign Gallup, they're not bad. Some are genuine, and they work hard at objectivity. But political candidate surveys are not genuine. I know; I studied it in college and worked them for years. Part of my degree's in it.

Leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I see it. On the other hand, I feel really good when I see one done well and objectively. :)

Wow; I just had to check whose post I was reading; this isn't word-for-word what [livejournal.com profile] grayhawkfh said yesterday, but it's pretty damned similar on the whole.

That's one of the snarkiest, most-amusing, things I've seen all day. Ditto to what Stef said.
